This Privacy Policy explains what information the Calorie Fox app (“Calorie Fox,” “the app,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) collects, how we use it, and the choices you have. By creating an account and using Calorie Fox, you agree to the practices described here.
The short version. We collect the email you sign up with and the data you log (calories, foods, workouts, and the body details and goals you choose to enter). When you use the photo or “Ask AI” features, your food photo or text description is sent to an AI model through OpenRouter to estimate calories. Subscriptions are processed by Apple and managed through RevenueCat. We do not sell your data or use it for advertising.
Who we are
Calorie Fox is operated by Murat Efe Doğan (“the developer”). If you have any questions about this policy or your data, contact us at [email protected].
Information we collect
We collect only what we need to run the app and sync your data across your devices:
- Account information. Your email address and a password, or, if you use Sign in with Apple, the anonymous Apple user identifier and the email Apple shares with us (which may be a private relay address). Passwords are never stored in plain text. They are stored as a salted hash (bcrypt) and we cannot read them.
- Calorie and activity data. The entries you log, including calories, an optional label (for example “Oatmeal” or “Walk”), whether the entry is food eaten or calories burned, and the date and time of the entry.
- Body profile. Optional details you enter to calculate goals and basal metabolism: biological sex, age, height, weight, activity level, weight goal, target weight and pace, the motivations and obstacles you pick during setup, and your daily calorie goals. You choose whether to provide these.
- Subscription status. Whether you have an active subscription or free trial, and when it renews or ends. Payments are handled entirely by Apple; we never see your payment details.
- Food searches. When a food isn’t in the app’s built-in library, the text you search for is sent to our server and on to the USDA FoodData Central database to find calorie values. No account information is sent to USDA.
- Food photos and text descriptions. When you use the photo estimate or “Ask AI” features, the image you capture or select, or the text you type, is sent to our server and on to our AI provider for calorie estimation (see “AI features” below).
- Basic technical data. Our server temporarily processes standard request information (such as IP address) for security and rate limiting. We do not use third-party analytics or advertising SDKs in the app.
- On your device only. Your water log and reminder settings stay on your device. Reminders are local notifications scheduled by the app; nothing is sent to a push server.
How we use your information
- To create and secure your account and keep you signed in.
- To save your entries and profile and sync them across your devices.
- To estimate calories from the photos and text you submit, and to look up foods you search for.
- To calculate a suggested daily calorie and water goal from your setup answers.
- To provide your subscription or free trial and restore it on your devices.
- To protect the service against abuse (for example, rate limiting the AI endpoints).
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use it for advertising or build advertising profiles.
AI features and third-party processing
Calorie estimates from photos and from the “Ask AI” text box are generated by AI models (primarily DeepSeek models) accessed through OpenRouter. When you use these features, the relevant image or text, without your name or email, is transmitted solely to produce an estimate, which is returned to you. We configure requests so that only model providers that do not retain or train on submitted data are used. See OpenRouter’s Privacy Policy for details.
Calorie figures produced by these features are estimates only and are provided for general informational and self-tracking purposes. They are not medical, nutritional, or dietary advice. Always use your own judgment and consult a qualified professional for health decisions.
How your data is stored
Your account and entries are stored in a MongoDB database, and the app’s backend is hosted on Railway. Data is transmitted between the app and our server over encrypted HTTPS connections. We rely on these infrastructure providers’ security measures together with our own safeguards (hashed passwords, token-based authentication).
Service providers
We share data with the following providers only to the extent needed to operate the app:
- OpenRouter (and the AI model providers it routes to): processes food photos and text descriptions to estimate calories.
- USDA FoodData Central: receives food search terms to return calorie values.
- RevenueCat: manages subscription status using your app account ID and Apple purchase receipts.
- Apple: processes subscription payments and, if you choose, Sign in with Apple.
- Railway: hosts our backend server and database.
These providers act on our behalf and are not permitted to use your data for their own independent purposes.
Data retention
We keep your account information and logged data for as long as your account exists, so the app can show your history and sync across devices. Photos and text submitted to the AI features are processed to generate an estimate and are not stored as a gallery within the app. When you delete your data or your account, the associated entries are removed from our database.
Your choices and rights
- Access and correction. You can view and edit your entries and profile directly in the app at any time.
- Deletion. You can reset your logged data, or permanently delete your whole account and all associated data, from Profile in the app (also available from the subscription screen). Deleting your account does not cancel an App Store subscription; cancel it in your Apple Account settings.
- Opting out of AI features. The photo and “Ask AI” features are optional. If you don’t use them, no images or descriptions are sent to our AI provider.
Depending on where you live (for example, the EU/EEA under the GDPR or California under the CCPA/CPRA), you may have additional rights, such as the right to access, correct, delete, or export your personal data, and to object to certain processing. To exercise any of these rights, contact us at [email protected].
Children’s privacy
Calorie Fox is not directed to children under 13 (or the minimum age required in your country), and we do not knowingly collect personal information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
International users
Your information may be processed and stored on servers located outside your country of residence, including in countries that may have different data protection laws. By using the app, you consent to this transfer and processing.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we do, we will revise the “Last updated” date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be reflected here, and your continued use of the app after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
